Questions about eligibility

How is BMI calculated?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). It gives a general indication of whether you are a healthy weight for your height, though it does not account for muscle mass or body composition.
What BMI do I need for a weight management programme?
Prescription weight management programmes are usually offered to adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above where there is a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Eligibility is always confirmed in a clinical consultation.
Is this checker a diagnosis?
No. This tool gives general guidance only and is not a medical diagnosis. A GPhC-registered prescriber will review your full health information before any treatment is offered, and treatment is supplied only where it is clinically appropriate.
Can I use the programme if I live outside Sheffield?
Yes. If you live outside Sheffield you can use our online weight management service, which includes a clinical consultation and next-day delivery across England. Sheffield patients can also attend our in-person clinic in Highfield.
