What is the MenACWY vaccine?
MenACWY is a single-dose vaccine that protects against four groups of meningococcal bacteria — A, C, W and Y — which can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These illnesses are uncommon but can develop with frightening speed and be fatal or life-changing, so prevention matters. The vaccine is recommended for teenagers and, importantly, for new university students, who are at higher risk in their first year because they live and socialise closely with many people from different places. It’s the same vaccine required for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage. At our Highfield clinic we offer MenACWY with same-day appointments, conveniently placed for students at both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam.
Why new students should be vaccinated
Starting university means meeting hundreds of new people and, for many, living in shared halls. This close mixing is exactly the environment in which meningococcal bacteria spread. MenACWY is offered free on the NHS up to age 25 for first-time students, but if you’d like quick, same-day access — or you’ve missed it — you can have it privately with us.
For both Sheffield universities
We’re well placed for the University of Sheffield (Western Bank and St George’s, near Broomhill) and Sheffield Hallam University (City and Collegiate campuses on Howard Street). Both are a short journey from our Highfield clinic, and we have free parking on site. Our busiest period is late August and September, so book before freshers’ week if you can.
What to expect
After a brief consultation to check suitability and review any previous doses, we give the vaccine in your upper arm. It’s quick, and most people have no more than mild soreness afterwards. For complete protection going into university, consider the MenB and MMR vaccines too — our student vaccinations page explains the full picture.
