What is the MMR catch-up vaccine?

The MMR vaccine protects against three serious infections — measles, mumps and rubella. It’s given routinely in childhood, but many adults missed one or both doses, and protection matters just as much later in life. An MMR catch-up is simply completing that course as an adult: two doses given at least four weeks apart, which provide strong, lasting immunity. This has become especially important as the UK has experienced measles outbreaks linked to falling vaccination rates. Measles is one of the most infectious diseases known and can cause serious complications, so being properly protected is well worth it — particularly for students heading into the close-contact environment of university, and for anyone planning to travel. At our Highfield clinic we offer the MMR catch-up with same-day appointments and free parking, and we’re happy to advise if you’re unsure about your vaccination history.

Who should consider it?

  • Adults who missed one or both childhood MMR doses
  • Students starting university, where universities advise being up to date
  • Healthcare and placement students who need proof of immunity
  • Travellers, as measles is common in many parts of the world
  • Anyone unsure of their vaccination history — it’s safe to have an extra dose

What to expect

After a short consultation to review your history, we give the first dose in your upper arm and arrange the second at least four weeks later. Side effects are usually mild. If you’re catching up before university, see our student vaccinations page for the other vaccines worth having, including MenACWY.

MMR vaccine price

  • MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) Per dose · 2-dose course £45

A travel health consultation is included with any vaccination. Prices are per dose unless stated; multi-dose courses are priced per dose.

Frequently asked questions

Can adults have the MMR vaccine?
Yes. Adults who missed one or both childhood doses can catch up at any age. A full course is two doses given at least four weeks apart, providing strong, long-lasting protection.
How do I know if I’ve had both doses?
If your records are unclear, it’s safe to be vaccinated again — there’s no harm in having an extra dose. We can talk through your history and advise at your appointment.
Why is MMR important right now?
The UK has seen measles outbreaks linked to lower vaccination rates. Measles is highly infectious and can cause serious complications, so ensuring you’re protected is especially worthwhile for students and young adults.
Do students need MMR for university?
It’s strongly recommended. Universities advise students to be up to date with MMR, and some healthcare courses require proof of immunity before placements.
